Mystic Square is the 5th game in the Touhou Project series and the last game in the PC-98 Era released in 1998. It follows the same formula of Story of Eastern Wonderland and Lotus Land Story as a singleplayer bullet hell-game.
The game follows 4 protagonists as they seek to investigate the cause of a large quantity of demons coming out of a cave that leads to Makai, the world of demons.
Shrine MaidenReimu Hakurei
A shrine maiden of Hakurei Shrine, who possesses natural-born spiritual power but lacks training.
MagicianMarisa Kirisame
She's an ordinary girl, even though she's a magician. She is somewhat self-confident, but has enough power to support her confidence too.
Evil SpiritMima
An evil spirit that has been living (?) for very long time. She appears to be enjoying her current days.
YoukaiYuuka
One of the strongest youkai living around Hakurei Shrine. One can never tell what she's thinking.
Gatekeeper of MakaiSara
Stage 1 Boss
A being who resides in the cave that houses the gateway to Makai. During the events of the game, she tries to prevent the heroine from entering Makai.
Makai PersonLouise
Stage 2 Boss
One of the many demons to coming out of Makai to Gensokyo. Before entering the human world, she unluckily ran into the heroine and was defeated. She is actually quite polite.
Girl of DeathAlice
Stage 3 Boss
The first boss the heroine meets after entering Makai. She tried to confront the heroine for invading Makai, but was defeated.
Black WitchYuki
Stage 4 Boss
She and Mai were waiting for the heroine in an attempt to prevent the heroine from going further into Makai, but was defeated. Yuki is more vocal of the two.
White WitchMai
Stage 4 Boss
She and Yuki were waiting for the heroine in an attempt to prevent the heroine from going further into Makai, but was defeated. Mai is more quieter of the two.
Makai MaidYumeko
Stage 5 Boss
After the heroine reaches Shinki, Yumeko intervenes to fight the heroine herself, ultimately ending up defeated. She is one of Shinki's strongest subjects.
God of MakaiShinki
Final Boss
The creator of Makai. During the events of the game, she allowed a tourist agency from Makai to organize trips to Gensokyo, causing problems for the residents. This caused the heroine to come to Makai to put an end to the intrusion and defeating Shinki in the process.
Alice in MagiclandAlice
Extra Stage Boss
Alice returns as the extra boss, this time using "ultimate magic" from a grimoire in an attempt to defeat the heroine.
